Threat Assessment Team

Observe or experience something you need to report?

Mission of the Threat Assessment Team

Mountain Gateway Community College is concerned about the safety, health and well-being of students, faculty and staff. There are tools in place meant to address issues regarding potential threats and activities disruptive to the mission of the College.

The College has a Threat Assessment Team (TAT) that meets to address referrals on individuals who may be acting in ways that signal the potential for harm to themselves or to others. The TAT is charged with addressing all reported behavioral or mental health incidents which occur on campus, the Rockbridge Regional Center, classes/training at an off-site location or on an electronic site, including e-mail, blogs, and Canvas postings.

Anyone may make a referral and a process is in place for handling each case in a proper, prompt and professional manner, respecting the rights and privacy of all parties involved. Questions regarding the TAT may be addressed to the Director of Student Services at 540/863-2925.

Frequently Asked Questions about TAT Referrals

What type of behavior warrants a referral?

Any self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation, erratic behaviors that disrupt teaching or College activities, or behaviors that might compromise safety should be referred. When in doubt, make the referral.

What do I do if I know an individual who may need to be referred to the TAT?

If you feel there is an immediate threat, dial 911.

To make a referral, go to the bottom of this page and click on 鈥淪ubmit and Incident Report鈥. You will be asked for basic information about the individual, how the TAT can contact you, and for a description of the incident or behaviors that prompted the referral.

Who can make a TAT referral?

Anyone who feels an individual associated with Mountain Gateway is a threat to himself/herself/ and/or the College community can make a referral. This includes students, faculty, staff and parents.

What happens after I make a referral?

The TAT members will take the information provided and make a decision regarding appropriate action.

How do I know if it is a TAT issue or it is more appropriately handled by another campus resource?

You do not have to make this determination. If another campus resource is more appropriate, the TAT will refer the student and handle the transfer of information.
