Book Checkouts, Renewals, and Policies

The loan period for books is four (4) weeks for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons, with renewals allowed if books are not on hold. Library materials, with the exception of in-library use only items, may be placed on hold, and you will be notified when the material is available.

Restricted Circulation: Reserve books, reference books, periodicals, and special collections items may only be used in the Library.

Renew Your Rental: You may renew items any time during library hours or by telephone unless a hold is placed on the item.

The general book collection is located in the stacks area at the back of the library. New, popular-reading books are displayed in the Reading Lounge at the front of the library.

Laptop Loan Program

The 91制片厂 Library has a limited number of laptops available for checkout. Laptops may be checked out for the semester and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact the library at (540) 863-2864 or library@mgcc.edu for more information.

Community Borrower Library Cards

Community members who would like a library card can come to the Circulation Desk with a current photo ID and proof of residence in the library's service district to receive a library card that gives them access to the library's print collection. Patrons must be at least 16 years old and must live in the 91制片厂 service region. Community borrowers are required to show some form of picture identification before a library card can be issued. A driver's license is the preferred type of identification. Other forms of identification include a military ID, a Virginia ID, or a school ID card with a photo on it. There is no fee for library cards. Community borrowers will be asked to fill out an application with appropriate current contact information, including an active e-mail address.

Interlibrary Loan

If you need a book or journal article that is not available through the 91制片厂 Library, you may request these items through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). We will request the item you need from another library that owns it. Items will be shipped to the 91制片厂 Library, where you can pick them up and return them. Materials generally arrive within a week after the request is submitted.

ILL is available to all 91制片厂 students, faculty, and staff, free of charge. Requests are limited to 6 articles and 3 books at one time. If a book is damaged or lost, the requestor is responsible for the fee charged by the lending library.

Please fill out the form or stop by the library to request an item.

*Please note that beginning May 14, 2022, the library will be unable to process ILL requests for community patrons.

Regulations

Overdue borrowers are notified by e-mail and mail: The library does not charge a late fee for overdue books unless it is 30 days overdue, at which point the item is considered lost. The borrower is then considered delinquent and cannot check out any more library materials until he or she has returned or paid for them. The delinquent account is sent to the Business Office for collection. Students may not graduate, receive transcripts, or register for classes until all obligations are satisfied.

A $1,053 replacement fee will be charged for loaner laptops that are not fully returned (laptop $966, case $22, charger $65) 15 days past the due date. A replacement fee of at least $25 will be charged for books (fee may be higher depending on cost of replacement) at 30 days past due. At 30 days past due, all delinquent accounts will be assessed an administrative/late fee by the college equal to 15% of the original debt.

Reference Books, Periodicals and Special Collections

Reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, and specialized indexes covering all subjects.

Periodical Collection: Current issues of magazines and newspapers are in the Reading Lounge but are not available to be checked out.

Online periodical databases and other resources are available through VIVA, a consortium of academic libraries in Virginia to which 91制片厂 belongs. VIVA provides almost 200 databases, many of which have full-text articles available, and approximately 800,000 electronic resources for the academic community. 91制片厂 users can access these resources through our .

Special Collections materials are available to all library users and contain archival material and books relating to Virginia history. Special Collection materials are for in-library use only.

Collection Development: Books and AV materials may only be purchased upon faculty request to align with academic programs.

Computers

Student computers with high speed Internet access are available to use free-of-charge and are located throughout the Library and in the Library鈥檚 computer lab. There are also three computers available for community patrons.

Printing: Printing is free to all 91制片厂 students. Prints are in black and white and are limited to 20 pages per day.

Services for Patrons with Disabilities

The 91制片厂 Library is committed to providing accessible resources and accommodations for patrons with disabilities. Patrons seeking assistance or who would like to report an issue with accessibility are encouraged to contact Nova Wright, nwright@mgcc.edu, Director of Library Services. We will partner with 91制片厂's Single Stop/ADA Coordinator, Holly Fasig, hfasig@mgcc.edu, to provide timely and high quality assistance.
