General Information

Start a stable career in a field that always needs workers. Mountain Gateway Community College is a licensed driving school that follows all federal rules to get you ready for the road.
We offer training in Roanoke, Buena Vista, and Clifton Forge. Our program uses a mix of classroom lectures, online work, and plenty of practice behind the wheel with professional instructors.

What You Will Earn
Once you finish your classes, complete your driving hours, and pass the state exam, you will receive:
•Ìý Ìý A state-issued Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
•Ìý Ìý An ELDT Theory Certificate.
•Ìý Ìý An ELDT Course Completion Certificate.

Training Breakdown
The program includes 80 total hours of instruction:
•Ìý Ìý 8 hours: Orientation and classroom learning.
•Ìý Ìý 27 hours: Online theory coursework.
•Ìý Ìý 45 hours: Driving practice and range of exercises. This includes 10 hours of evaluations and your 5-hour final state exam.

Student Services
We know you're busy, so we offer flexible hours to fit your schedule:
•Ìý Ìý Monday–Friday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
•Ìý Ìý Saturday–Sunday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
•Ìý Ìý Permit Testing: You can take your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) tests right here on campus.

Entry Requirements
To sign up for the CDL B program, you must:
•Ìý Ìý Be at least 18 years old.
•Ìý Ìý Pass a DOT physical exam.
•Ìý Ìý Pass a drug test before you enroll.
•Ìý Ìý Note: You must get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before you can start the driving portion of the class.

FastForward Financial Assistance Available

Qualifying Virginia residents may be eligible for FastForward financial assistance, which could reduce the cost of tuition by two-thirds.
